Lifestyle Diseases among Inmates of a Women’s Hostel in Alleppey
Author Name : Saniya K Ramesh, Dr Elezebath John
ABSTRACT
Over the past decades, India has witnessed a dramatic epidemiological transition from contagious diseases to non-communicable diseases. 53% of total deaths and 44% of disability-adjusted life-years (DALYS) lost in India are as result of NCDs. In line with the Sustainable Development Goals, the National Health Policy – India targets to lower the incidences of premature mortality due to non-communicable diseases by 2030. A questionnaire survey was conducted from 1st August 2022 to 3rd August, 2022 in a sample of 40 consenting women living in a hostel in Alappuzha. The participants were required to answer 42 questions about seven common lifestyle diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, hypercholesterolemia, asthma, PCOD, insomnia and arthritis. It was found that majority of the inmates had one or more of the above said seven diseases. This is indicative of lack of proper diet and physical activity among the volunteer sample. Therefore, necessary healthcare interventions are required to prevent these diseases.
