A Review on Global Charcoal Types and Production Methods
Author Name : K. Keerthana, R. Chitra, M. Afrrin
ABSTRACT
The most notable application of waste to energy process is in charcoal production where wastes like municipal solid wastes are used as basic raw materials for charcoal production through which global needs are met. This review is about charcoal production which is produced by any natural materials, wastes, light wood, plants or any biomass materials with limited oxygen supply in specific controlled environments. By this method removal of all water and volatile constituents is possible which gives efficient output. Charcoal production through pyrolysis process is the traditional method called charcoal burning where heat is supplied by burning part of the starting material with a limited supply of oxygen. When there is incomplete combustion this process happens naturally and is used occasionally in radiocarbon dating. Charcoal production removes 50% of the total woody biomass and the woodland regenerates from a pool of stunted old seedlings and stumps of cut trees. This review throws light on the various types of charcoal, various methods of production worldwide and global charcoal market.
