A Review on Novel Mucoadhesive Drug Delivery System With Special Emphasis on Gastric Route
Author Name : Aamir Khan, Dr. Dilip Kumar Gupta, Dr. Vishwanath Agrahari
ABSTRACT
Controlled oral medication delivery effectiveness is linked to physiological challenges such as short stomach residency duration and unpredictable gastric emptying time. Longer gastric residency lengthens drug release, decreases drug waste, and enhances drug solubility in the stomach's pH. This has sparked interest in developing gastroretentive drug delivery systems to ensure delivery of medicines that have a limited absorption window and improves bioavailability. Mucoadhesion permits the distribution of a long range of materials via a number of channels, including ophthalmic, nasal, vaginal buccal, rectal, and gastrointestinal. The current study discusses the mechanisms of mucoadhesion, numerous theories of mucoadhesion, variables that affect mucoadhesion, a basic overview of gastroretentivemucoadhesives, mucoadhesive polymers, and their methods of assessment.
