INTRODUCTION
Post partum psychosis, also known as puerperal psychosis or postnatal psychosis is a mental illness that can affect around 1 in 500 mothers after they have given birth.Postpartum psychosis can be evident in 1-2 out of 1000 childbearing women during the first 2 to 4 weeks post delivery. It can even be seen earlier such as at 2-3 days post-delivery.Postpartum or maternity blues maybe observed in 50-75% of postpartum women and postpartum depression maybe seen in 10-13% of women. The postpartum period makes them more vulnerable to various psychiatric disorders. Traditionally postpartum psychiatric disorders were classified as maternity blues, puerperal psychosis, and postnatal depression.Postpartum psychiatric disorders can adversely affect the mother-infant interaction and attachment. Hence, the early diagnosis and adequate management of the postpartum psychiatric disorder is extremely important. (1,2)
