A snapshot of unwanted student behavior in a rural elementary school in the Philippines

Author Name : Araneta, Bryan Yves G.

Abstract

Identified factors that can trigger or influence unwanted classroom behaviors such as bullying, making unnecessary
noises, annoying teachers were verified to exist in a rural elementary school. Thirty-two (32) students, purposively identified
by teachers to frequently display these “bad behaviors” participated in the study. The 8 factors included in the 65-item
questionnaire that may be the cause or promoters of these behaviors are School Facilities, Peers, Learning Materials,
Community, Subject Concerns, Personal Factors, Teacher factors, and Parents. Friedman’s Two-Way Analysis of Variance
showed that there are significant differences (p= 0.00) in the self-ratings of students on each of the 8 factors considered. The

school facilities (mean=89.91), peers (mean=81.37), and learning materials (mean=81.16) were the highest among the self-
ratings. These are thus, the areas that also need the most intervention. A focused-group discussion in the form of a short

dialogue between the researcher, the school principal, and 3 teachers was made to discuss the potential implications of this
cross-sectional study.
