A Study of Human Relationship in Shashi Deshpande’s A Matter of Time

ABSTRACT

The present paper focuses on various dimensions of human relationship in the novel A Matter of Time by Shashi Deshpande. She is an eminent contemporary writer in Indian writing in English fiction. She mainly deals with the complexities of human relationship in detail through her works. Women are mostly at the center of her novels and they are surrounded with various familial and human relationships.  Her A Matter of Time (1996), is also centered around an Indian family based in south India and explorers the life of four generations of women of a family.  She highlighted on the significance of the human bonding in an individual’s life. Her women character experiences the turmoil, suffering and pain of all kind and they struggle to overcome all the hurdles of life with courage. It is all possible because of the love and support of their family and relationship. Shashi Deshpande with her sharp insight into the life of her women character narrates the journey and experiences of these characters. Her novel A Matter of time deals with the story of four generations of women of same family-- Manorama, Kalyani, Sumi and Aru. In this paper, several dimensions of human relationship among these four generations have been discussed in detail.
