A Study of Nora and Mrs. Alving as Tragic Heroines in Ibsen's Plays

ABSTRACT : This research paper explores the portrayal of Nora Helmer in "A Doll's House" and Mrs. Helen Alving in "Ghosts" as tragic heroines in Henrik Ibsen's plays. By analyzing key themes such as societal expectations, confinement, self-discovery, and the pursuit of personal freedom, this study aims to shed light on the tragic nature of these female characters. Through their journeys of self-realization and subsequent confrontations with societal norms, Nora and Mrs. Alving emerge as powerful representations of tragic heroines who challenge and ultimately redefine their roles within their respective societies. This study examines the characters of Nora Helmer in "A Doll's House" and Mrs. Helen Alving in "Ghosts" as tragic heroines in Henrik Ibsen's plays. The research delves into key themes such as societal expectations, confinement, self-discovery, and the pursuit of personal freedom to establish their tragic nature.
