A Study of the Prescription Pattern for Alcohol Withdrawal State in Tertiary Care Hospital Bathinda

ABSTRACT

Objective: This present study was aimed to identify the prescription pattern for Alcohol Withdrawal State and to evaluate the rationality of prescription pattern.

Method: This hospital based observational study was conducted for period of 6 months. A total of 41 prescriptions of patients who suffered from alcohol withdrawal state were analysed after screening inclusion and exclusion criteria. The prescription pattern was studied and data was collected using patient profile form.

Result The study summarized that total number of drugs prescribed were 25 to 41 patients out of which benzodiazepines were (21.7%), antipsychotic drugs (20%), anticonvulsants (1.75%), anticraving drugs (5.9%), multivitamins (19.6%), antacids (12.2%), antiemetic (2.85%), hepatoprotective (6.6%), beta blockers (5.2%), and other drugs disulfiram, lithium carbonate. In the treatment of alcohol withdrawal state benzodiazepines, antipsychotics drugs play main role.

Conclusion Prescription pattern studies have become a potential tool for evaluating the health care systems. In this study analyzed from the prescription of patients it was observed that a greater number of drugs can be prescribed from essential list of medicines. Most of the drugs are prescribed by brand names and only few are prescribed by generic name. The mostly prescribed drugs are benzodiazepines and antipsychotic drugs. These drugs are prescribed in various combinations to treat alcohol withdrawal symptoms
