A Study on the Impact of Globalization on Cropping Pattern in Theni District

INTRODUCTION

Cropping pattern implies that the change in the proportion of area under different crops. The determinants of cropping pattern are physical characteristics of the soil of the particular region, the price of the product, the size of the farm, insurance facility and farming community; they are reluctant in crop shifts even there is a scope for profitability in the shifts. In India, before 1950-51, more than 83 per cent of the land was under the cultivation of food grains. Mere 17 per cent was under non-food grain crop cultivation. During 1950-51 the area under food crop cultivation has come down to 74 per cent and area under non-food crop cultivation has increased to 26 per cent. Further food crop cultivation declined to 64 per cent in 2006-2007 and non- food crop cultivation increased to 36 per cent.
