Analysis of Digital Elevation Model for Terrain Characteristics from Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission (SRTM) Data using Geospatial Approach: A Case study of Ur River Basin, Tikamgarh District (M.P.), India

Author Name : Vineesha Singh

ABSTRACT

An attempt has been made to the study Analysis of the Digital Terrain Model and its relationship to the surface topography of the Ur river basin, which is located in Tikamgarh district of Madhya Pradesh state. The shuttle radar topography mission (SRTM) provides highest resolution digital elevation model (DEM) of the Earth. This DEM is a very useful feature in the geospatial analysis. It is used for many research applications and can be analyzed, manipulated in many ways. DEMs are widely used for topographic surface, landscape analysis and hydrological analysis.

Terrain elevation analysis is the quantitative analysis of topographic surfaces. The main purpose of a digital terrain system is to provide the digital representation of terrain so that environmental problem like soil erosion, runoff estimation in the Basin, surface analysis and its correlation of drainage density, may be approached accurately and efficiently through automated means.

SRTM-Digital Elevation Models (DEMs) are known to be very useful data sources for the automated delineation of surface topographic thematic maps. The topographical analysis of the area had done with the assistance of DEM, attribute information of different stream order of the basin. The raster DEM(digital terrain model) was extracted from a 90m. resolution data of the study area. It is an ideal data-set for precise terrain analysis and topographic characterization in terms of the nature of altimetric distribution, relief aspects, patterns of lineaments and surface slope, topographic elevation profiles and their visualization, correlation between geology and slope topography.

The Ur  river basin  study area covers an approximately 1500.27sq.km. of Tikamgarh district, MadhyaPradesh. The result of elevation variation using SRTM-DEM were analysed. Using this DEM output as input in ArcGIS to prepare the Slope, Contour, Aspect, hillshade analysis and  curvature details of the study area were attempted. The 3-D scene tool of the ArcGIS software were used for visualization of terrain in 3-D view. SRTM data more suitable to Terrain ,DEM analysisas well as hydrological analysis.
