Analysis of SMAC and TMAC Protocols for Energy-Efficient Medium-Sized Wireless Sensor Networks: A Comparative Approach

Author Name : Rinku Patel, Dr. Nirav Bhatt

ABSTRACT In Wireless Sensor Networks, where sensor nodes operate under stringent energy constraints, the Medium Access Control layer plays a crucial role in optimizing energy consumption while ensuring reliable communication. This paper presents a comparative analysis of two prominent MAC protocols, namely Sensor MAC and Timeout MAC, focusing on their ability to deliver energy efficiency as a quality of service in medium-sized WSN deployments. By synthesizing existing literature and leveraging simulation-based experiments, we evaluate the performance of SMAC and TMAC in terms of energy consumption and network lifetime. Our findings contribute to the understanding of MAC protocol selection for energy-sensitive WSN applications, providing insights into the tradeoffs between energy efficiency and Quality of Service.
