Anatomical changes in Sandhigata vata
Author Name : Dr. Ashish Nandal
ABSTRACT: Acharya Charaka was the first person to describe the disease separately named “Sandhigata Anila” under the heading of Vatavyadhi. Sandhigata vata is a disease occurring as a result of affliction of sandhis by vitiated Vata dosha. The symptoms of sandhigata vata are Sandhishula, Sandhishotha and Sandhinasha. Acharya Vagbhatta said Vatavyadhi as “Maharoga”. This can be correlated to Osteoarthritis. It is the most common form of arthritis. It can affect both the larger and the smaller joints of the body, including the hands, feet, back, hip or knee. The disease is essentially one acquired from daily wear and tear of the joint; however, osteoarthritis can also occur as a result of injury. It shows a strong association with ageing and is major cause of pain & disability in the elderly.
