Antibacterial and antioxidant capacities of Aloe barbadensis Miller plant extracts using different solvents

Author Name : Arpana Ashokrao Durge

ABSTRACT Ethanolic extracts of Aloe barbadensis Miller showed promising antimicrobial activity against B. subtilis with the zone of inhibition of 13±0.4 mm. Apart from this following pattern of antimicrobial activity was seen against B. subtilis, Ethanolic extract > Aqueous extract > Methanolic extract > Hexane extract. For E. coli following pattern was noted, Ethanolic extract > methanolic extract > aqueous extract > Hexane extract. Ethanolic extract showed highest ABTS (2, 2'-Azino-Bis-3-Ethylbenzothiazoline-6-Sulfonic Acid) scavenging potential of 2.9 mM Trolox equivalent/mg followed by methanol, aqueous and hexane extracts respectively.
