Applications of Data Science and Safety
Author Name : Rajesh Kulkarni
ABSTRACT
This article examines the critical factors involved in the application of data science in occupational safety and considers plausible reasons why what is known as Safety Data Science (SDS) is still a distant reality in most organizations. To this end, existing literature was examined and inductive reasoning was used to identify potential barriers to mass adoption of SDS. As a result, thefundamentals are presented and three critical factors are discussed: (1) the lack of a theoretical basis for SDS to guide empirical applications; (2) lack or weakness of organizational level security intelligence and (3) lack of information science expertise from the perspective of security professionals. Study has important implications. From a theoretical perspective, it provides an initial conceptual basis for the SDS and presents its critical factors. In addition, security professionals are provided with guidance on how to become familiar with the SDS at the organizational level.
