Assessment of Prescribing Pattern of Antibiotics in Respiratory Infections in Tertiary Care Hospital

ABSTRACT
Respiratory infections are very common in developing countries.
Objective: The main objective of the study is to analyze prescription pattern of antibiotics given to the patient of suffering from respiratory infections.
Methods: Analyse the prescriptions, using World Health Organization drug prescribing indicators.
Result: A total of 112 prescriptions were analyzed after screening inclusion and exclusion criteria. The total number of males were 65(58%) and females were 47(42%). The antibiotics commonly prescribed were Azithromycin, Levofloxacin and Faropenem mainly for COVID-19, Pneumonia and Asthma. Percentage of encounter with antibiotics prescribed was higher as compared to WHO indicator. Oral drug formulations were prescribed higher as compared to other drug formulations. Overall drugs prescribed per encounter was 4.9 per prescription. 24.7% of the drugs were prescribed by generic name. Percentage of encounter with antibiotics prescribed was 83.9% and Percentage of encounter with injection was 9.3%.In this study greater number of drugs were prescribed from National List of Essential Medicines (69%). Prescription pattern studies have become a potential tool for evaluating the health care systems. Prescription of drugs by generic name also needs improvement.
