ABSTRACT

Background: . Sleep deprivation is defined as the condition of not having enough sleep or when Staff Nurses get less than average need for 7-9 hours sleep a night and Patient care abilities refers to the capacity of Nurses to provide appropriate care to the patient as per need of the patient.

Objectives : The Objectives of the Study were to determine the level of sleep deprivation among Staff nurses ,determine the patient care abilities ,find the cor-relation between sleep deprivation and patient care abilities, find the association between sleep deprivation with selected demographic variables, find the association between patient care abilities with selected demographic variables .

Methodology: A quantitative research approach with descriptive correlational design was used. 60 staff nurses working in ICU, Post-Operative Ward and Emergency Wards  of SKIMS Soura were selected by non-probability purposive sampling. Assessment of Sleep Deprivation  and Patient  Care ability was done by using a ‘self-constructed Sleep Deprivation Checklist and ‘Patient Care Ability Rating  Scale  respectively.

Results: The study showed that maximum staff nurses  were suffering  from moderate Sleep Deprivation and majority had good patient care ability, a negative correlation was found between sleep deprivation and patient care abilities. A significant association was found between Working Hours during night duty and Sleep Deprivation, and a Significant association was found between Gender and Working Hours  with Patient Care ability .

  • The assessment of Sleep deprivation Level in Staff Nurses revealed that Majority of the samples had moderate sleep deprivation So there is  need to improve strategies of interventions for preventing  sleep deprivation  .

The assessment of Patient care ability level in Staff Nursesrevealed that 66.7% of the samples had good patient care ability Nursesrevealed that 66.7% of the samples had good patient care ability.

There was a negative correlation between sleep deprivation and patient care abilities among staff nurses..The findings suggest that as sleep deprivation among the staff nursesincreases the patient care ability decrease s .So there is need to increase Quality Sleep and Hours of Sleep among Staff Nurses by having either Chance to nap during Night duty or by having enough Staff Personnel available during Night Shift in order to have better Patient Outcome and Care.
