Author Name : R. Rajadurga, Madhan Raja, Sanjana Julias Thilakar
Bougainvillea spectabilis is a thorny shrub with 15 genus belonging to family Nyctaginaceae . Bougainvillea spectabilis is also called as paper flower or great Bougainvillea available in various colours like pink ,white, orange, red etc . These Bougainvillea spectabilis has a bright coloured pigment called as betalanin . These betalanin pigments are rich in antioxidants and are also used as colour additives. Phytochemical, qualitative and quantitative analysis were done to detect the components present in them. Antioxidant activities were analysed out with FRAP, Total antioxidant activity, hydrogen peroxide radical scavenging assay, DPPH ( 2,2- dihydryl- picryl-hydrazyl) radical scavenging assay, to calculate quantitative analysis of total phenol, tannins and flavanoid contents for all the ingredients used in herbal tea. High performance liquid chromatography was done to detect the components present in spectrometric analysis. Results obtained from the study showed that in both aqueous and methanol extracts of Bougainvillea spectabilis, Cinnamomum zeylanicum and Honey showed presence of various phytochemicals such as Tannins, Flavanoids , Steroids , Terpenoids , Saponins , Alkaloids , Carbohydrates , Aminoacids etc. Total estimation of phytochemicals and antioxidant showed that Total Phenol content of Bougainvillea spectabilis is slightly less than Cinnamomum zeylanicum had a significant phenol and flavonoid content. HPLC analysis revealed the presence of components. Betalanins are nitrogeneous pigments rich in antioxidants which fights against free radicals play a vital role in heart disease , diabetics and cancers .
