Author Name : Dr. Priyadarsini Mitra

ABSTRACT Buddhism is a not only a major universal classical religion but also a one of nine Indian philosophical schools. Buddhism is a pragmatic and humanistic teaching of Buddha. Buddha preached his teaching for removing the suffering from human life through the rectification of human behaviour. It was the main purpose of his teaching. Buddha first preached ‘Four Noble Truths’ in which he taught that human life is full of suffering, we are suffering because we are ignorance. For removing ignorance we have to follow the ‘Eight Fold Path’. So if we want to remove this suffering we can remove and we can achieve nirvana but we have to rectify our self by Buddha's teaching. After removing suffering we will achieve enlightenment and we will stay at the stage of happiness because supreme bliss or happiness is the condition of nirvana. So for removing suffering and achieving happiness we have to follow the ‘Eight Fold Path’. When we will follow the eight fold paths, our mind will be transformed and it will be enlightened and an enlightened person certainly an ideal person of society. So for removing the suffering, achieving enlightenment and becoming an ideal person for society is the purpose of Buddha's teaching. Nirvana is a blissful condition or happiness which can be achieved only in this life by our own right effort. When we will follow the eight fold path then our enlightened mind will be able to destroy our ignorance and we will be free from three poisons (greed, hatred and delusion) of life. Our mind will be enlightened. Our enlightened mind enjoy happiness and able to show the right path to others as a perfect teacher or an ideal person. Through this paper I would like to focus on the importance of enlightened mind for being an ideal person of society.
