Characterization of Clayey Soil for Stabilization using Phosphogypsum and Surkhi

Author Name : Mayur Sabhnani, Mahesh Ram Patel

ABSTRACT

Due to poor properties of a clayey soil like low strength and high compressibility, a proper stabilization method is required to improve the performance of clayey soil. Utilization of industrial wastes for soil stabilization not only solves the disposal problem but serve as a cost effective way to stabilize the soil having the cohesive property. In the present paper two industrial wastes, surkhi  as an additive and phosphogypsum as a stabilizer are used to improve the properties of clayey soil. Phosphogypsum is a by-product generated during the production of fertilizer and this waste is stacked in a slurry form on the large area of land due to which extra money is required for proper management of a gypstack for handling this waste. Surkhi is generated as a waste during the preparation of clay brick. The effect of variation in percentage of phosphogypsum on clayey soil samples with 15% surkhi is presented. This paper studies the laboratory experimental result of virgin soil samples mixed with 15 % of surkhi and varying percentage of phosphogypsum. It was found that during this study that the use of phosphogypsum and surkhi which are generated as wastes from industries is suitably used for the improvement in the properties of the clayey soil.
