Author Name : Dr. Nidhi Turan
ABSTRACT Modern life is replete with frequent strains, deadlines, hurdles, frustrations, and demands, which collectively are denoted as stress by even a lay-person. For many people, stress is so usual that they take it as a way of life. While many people hold it responsible for their physical breakdowns, the others take it as a support that can help one perform under pressure and motivate to do the best. All in all, the phenomenon of stress has come to limelight not because of its positive side but owing to its adverse manifestations in the health conditions, interpersonal behaviour, family feuds, absenteeism, attrition, premature retirements, etc. the present paper reveals that no occupation is devoid of occupational stress and there is a lot of similarity in research ideas in so far as suggested coping strategies are concerned. Major coping strategies which have come to fore from the research studies conducted in India and abroad during 1991 to 2010 include holistic approach to stress at the organization level and change in life style at individual level. As the occupational stress is found to generate within organizations, it becomes imperative that they devise and execute stress management in their own interest.
