Diverse Therapeutic Properties of Trachyspermum Ammi: A Review

Medicinal plants are a source of huge economic value all over the world. Fruits of Trachyspermum ammi (Ajwain) are widely used as spice and constituents of various food items. Ajwain seed with its culinary uses it also known to have many interesting therapeutic properties. The essential oils present in seed and various extracts of it is massive source of bioactive molecules. It contains mainly thymol, cymene, terpinene, limonene, carvacrol which are important components that are responsible for its therapeutic value. It is used in traditional medicine for many purposes, which has in most cases been justified by modern scientific studies on its biological effects. Traditionally Trachyspermum ammi is used to treat digestive disorder like large intestine toxins, different gastric problems, pain, diarrhea and indigestion and also used against respiratory disorder including cold, cough, fever, asthma. Its preparations used against skin diseases, inflammation, cuts, etching, weight loss etc. Number of studies shows that Trachyspermum ammi exhibits diverse therapeutic properties like antihypertensive, antioxidant, antitumor, hepatoprotective, antipyretic, antidepressant, analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-diarrheal, antibacterial, antifungal activities.
