Impact of Covid-19 on Women Entrepreneurs of Nagaland

Author Name : Sohile Tep, Dr. K. Sethupathy

ABSTRACT

India's working-age women account for 432 million people, making them the country's largest untapped economic resource. With this in mind, numerous programmes aimed exclusively at women are being developed in order to boost the number of women employed. The majority of women-led enterprises in India are micro-entrepreneurial and self-funded. As per the 2011 census, Nagaland's combined workforce rate is 44.7 percent female and 53.4 percent male. Where women make up a bigger percentage of cultivators and agricultural labourers than men, males make up a higher percentage of workers in other occupations.

The majority of women entrepreneurs in Nagaland work in agriculture, beauty parlors, retail establishments, street vendors and other micro enterprises, all of which are severely impacted by the Covid-19 lockdown. With the abrupt onset of a pandemic, many services have switched to the online medium; yet, women in India have inadequate access to technology, the internet, and available time to use such resources.  This has a negative impact on business operated by women. Also during lockdown a huge chunk of care giving responsibilities have fallen on women. The focus of the study is to determine the repercussion of Covid-19 on Nagaland’s women entrepreneurs.
