Impact of Quantum Computing on Optimization in MRI Machines

ABSTRACT The present work focuses on quantifying benefits of quantum computing to improve MRI technology with the purpose to solve major problems in medical imaging. Following a targeted cross-sectional design and using a quantitative and qualitative approach, quantum algorithms were then designed and compared to traditional optimizers on standardized MRI data. Necessarily, the execution time of image reconstruction was 40% reduced, while SNR and CNR were enhanced. From the radiologists’ feedback, improved confidence in diagnosis from quantum enhanced images was evident leading to the endorsement of the improvements in quantum optimized algorithms. Although, based on the results, quantum computing was found to improve the performance of MRI, more studies have to be carried out to investigate the possibility of its application in various healthcare environments. This work points the way toward seeing how quantum computing can be used to change medical imaging for the better.
