ABSTRACT In situ gels represent a formulation strategy in pharmaceutical research which undergo phase transition upon administration, thereby improving drug delivery efficiency. This article reviews various aspects crucial to understand in situ gels, its ideal characteristics, polymers used in their formulation, methods of preparation, different approaches of in situ gels, its advantages & disadvantages, its applications along with recent developments of in situ gels. They are in sol form before administration and gellate in situ thereafter. There are several ways to employ these systems: orally, intraperitoneally, ocularly, rectally, vaginally, and injectably. They provide stable, long-lasting activity, strong patient compliance, and biocompatibility features. Stimulus-sensitive hydrogels have been developed recently in polymer science to provide tailored medication delivery. These systems cost effective and they are less complicated and more reproducible and hence dependable.
