ABSTRACT

Interpersonal relationships are social bonds and affiliations that people develop. Relationship is defined as an enduring association between two persons. Theories and researches suggest that relationships play a significant role in an individual’s life and that relationships are associated with health and wellbeing. The purpose of this paper is to review theoretical considerations that emphasize on relationships being a significant aspect of healthy psychological development. The paper mainly focuses on the interpersonal approach, object relations theories, Kohut’s self psychology, the attachment theory, and finally stress related and direct effect models of social support. These theoretical considerations indicate that relationships are highly impactful and very significant in the healthy psychological development of an individual. Satisfying relationships are associated with a wide range of aspects of positive wellbeing, whereas, disturbed relationships are associated with a number of psychological problems.
