Author Name : Suyash Shashikant Deshmukh
ABSTRACT
In recent years, Autonomous Vehicles is considering as perfect solution for road safety as 1.3 million people die each year because of road traffic crashes according to WHO. Hence, the understanding of safety of autonomous vehicles is become a need. In this study, we have reviewed level of automation present in autonomous vehicle as it affects safety of vehicle. In additionally, we have also analysed on-road testing of vehicles and accident reports of autonomous vehicle to find out safety statistics of autonomous vehicle. On average there are 9.1 accident per million miles driven for autonomous vehicle and for same rate for regular vehicles is 4.1 million miles. But still injuries caused by autonomous vehicle are less severe than regular vehicle. Automation in vehicle can help to improve road safety but driver must be alert to take control of vehicle at any time. This study is to find out what different type of error can generate and how we can improve safety of autonomous vehicle that can help future researchers to improve development of autonomous vehicle.
