Knowledge on Health Hazards of Plastic use Among Student Nurses in Selected Nursing College

ABSTRACT Usage of plastic is inevitable in our daily life. In India major reason for environmental pollution is for abundant usage of plastic. In present day times, the usage of plastics amongst school going children in India had increase remarkably in the form of plastic schoolbags, water bottles, cans, plastic containers etc and is exposed to many dangers. The objectives of the study were to assess the knowledge regarding health hazards of plastic use among student nurses and to find out the association between knowledge regarding health hazards of plastic use and selected socio-demographic variable. The research study was held at Canossa College of Nursing, cherukunnu, Kannur using quanitative non experimental descriptive research study. The sample constitutes of 89 student nurses. The subjects were selected by purposive sampling technique. The data was collected from the participants using structured questionnaire and the data was analysed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The study finding revealed that 2.2% had good knowledge, 79.8% had average knowledge, 18% had poor knowledge regarding health hazards of plastic use. The summary of chi square analysis is used to bring out the association between knowledge regarding hazards of plastic use and socio-demographic variables. The result showed that there is high significant association between knowledge regarding health hazards of plastic use and selected demographic variables (previous knowledge regarding health hazards of plastic use). This reveals that nursing students need more knowledge regarding health hazards of plastic use.
