ABSTRACT

Land degradation is the loss of a sustained economic, cultural, or ecological function as a result of human activity combined with natural processes. It is a phenomenon of losing land productivity due to human induced activity or natural phenomena.  This paper critically examines the causes and effects of land degradation with respect to the State of Haryana. It also uses quantitative techniques to examine the status of land degradation in the state by exploring the satellite images. However, this paper also provides a holistic overview of Policies and Programmes to curb the effects of Land Degradation. Furthermore, this paper provides unique blended solutions and suggestions with respect to the state of Haryana. There are innovative suggestions which include: Participatory Rural Appraisal, Decentralisation and Capacity Building Programme which provide a unique opportunity to enhance the grassroot level.
