Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act: Weighing the Pros and Cons

The Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (hereinafter referred to as MGNREGA) was enacted on 7th September, 2005 with a view to enhance the security of livelihood of millions of households in the rural areas of the nation by way of providing a minimum of hundred working days every year. The objectives of the Act include provision of opportunities for wage employment, creation of sustainable livelihoods of rural people by way of regenerating the natural resources and using decentralization, transparency, and accountability to make rural governance stronger and more stable.
