Author Name : N Jabili Sravya, K. Anie Vijetha
A tablet composed of active and inert ingredients that have been compressed into tablets containing multiple layers. Oral drug delivery is most preferred route for administration of various drugs. But conventional oral drug delivery system produces wide range fluctuations in drug concentration in plasma and blood stream which may result in unpredictable absorption or reduced efficiency and may cause toxicity. Multilayered tablets offer wide range of solutions to the challenges observed in conventional oral dosage forms, which produce multiphasic release systems, combine incompatible drugs and Gastro retentive systems. Multilayered tablets also provide efficiency at less cost. Generally, treatment of a disease or disorder involves usage of two or more drugs, when drugs are having synergistic therapeutic activity, they can be formulated as multilayered tablet. Not all APIs are compatible with each other thus multilayered tablets can be made with APIs in separate layers. Drug can also be delivered with different rate profiles where one layer can produce immediate release and other layer produce sustained release. Multilayered tablets are widely used for chronological release of two or more drugs in combination. This article provides information about manufacturing, advantages, strategies and evaluation of multilayered tablets.
