Numerical Investigation of Connecting Rod for Composite Materials using Ansys
Author Name : Vivek Upadhyay, Prof. Shantanu Roy
ABSTRACT
Connecting rods are generally used in all variants of Internal Combustion type of Automobile Engines. A Connecting rod is nothing but a linkage mechanism between the piston and the crankshaft of the engine, whose work is to convert the reciprocating motion of the piston to the rotary motion of crankshaft. Thus, our study aims to carry out the effects of generated stresses and strains, total deformation and analysis of factor of safety of pin end of the connecting rod using different composite materials. In general, connecting rods are made up of carbon steels and in recent developments, aluminum alloys are also used for manufacturing them. In this work, existing connecting rod material (i.e. Carbon Steel EN8Ds) is replaced by Carbon Epoxy, Resin Epoxy and E-Glass Epoxy. Finite Element Analysis will be carried out by considering these four materials. For this study, a solid3D model of Connecting rod was generated using PTC Creo 3.0 software package and analysis was carried out by Ansys Workbench 2020 R1 software. Post analysis, useful factors such as stresses, strain etc. were obtained and compared for best possible material. Our major objective is to determine whether Epoxy Resins are useful for manufacturing Connecting Rod or not.
