Remembering Radhanath Sikdar
Author Name : Dr. Rahul Kumar Mohanta
ABSTRACT
A Bengali mathematician and surveyor Radhanath Sikdar was the first person to identify the Mount Everest (then known as peak XV) as the world’s highest peak. He calculated its height accurately in 1852.However it was announced officially in 1854.On the other hand, History finds him also as a prominent scientist among the famous ‘Young Bengal’ group led by Henry Louis Vivian Derozio(1809-1831) fighting against various social injustices and superstitions prevailing at that time. In this article, my attempt is to revisit his life and contributions.
