Simultaneous Employment of Multiple Laws for Maintenance: An Analysis

INTRODUCTION
Maintenance is the amount which a husband is under an obligation to make to a wife either during the subsistence of the marriage or upon separation or divorce, under certain circumstances. Important it is to note that maintenance not only includes basic necessities like food, clothing and residence but it also includes the things necessary for comfort and status in which the person entitled is reasonably expected to live. The Supreme Court has observed that the amount of permanent alimony awarded to the wife must be befitting the status of the parties and the capacity of the spouse to pay maintenance.
With the overwhelming number of instances of unjust social environment that women in India were subjected to in families, social legislation benefitting women has taken a tremendous transformation, to the extent that the legislature may now start considering measures to bring equity to the rights of men in India. It is true that half of the Indian populations too are women. Women have always been discriminated against and have suffered and are suffering discrimination in silence. Self-sacrifice and self-denial are their nobility and fortitude and yet they have been subjected to all inequalities, indignities, and discrimination
