Socio-Cultural Condition of Toto Tribes: The Study of Alipurduar District in West Bengal

ABSTRACT One of the rarest tribes of India is the Toto tribes. This community is one of the three (Birhore, Lodha, and Toto) tribes identified by the West Bengal government as primitive tribe. The Toto tribe is located at the foot of the Tading hills on the Indo - Bhutan border, 22 kilometres from Madarihat, in the Alipurduar district of West Bengal, the village is known as Toto Para. Toto indigenous society is very different from other indigenous community in India. Their culture, various social religious aspects, their livelihood to education, socio economic condition completely different. And also Toto tribe lives in completely isolation from the mainstream of society. This paper deals to explore of socio cultural conditions of Toto tribes and to review cultural transformation of Toto society and also analyses of religious - social customs of Toto tribes in West Bengal.
