Stir Casting Method as a Novel Method for Fabrication of Aluminium Matrix Composites: A Review

Author Name : Naresh Kumar, Dr. Naveen Hooda

ABSTRACT

In Today's competitive world, there is a trend of using lighter and stronger materials. In this context AMMCs are suiting to these demands. Further we have to produce or fabricate the AMMCs in bulk and in a cost effective manner. Stir casting is a very good and novel technique among liquid state processes used for fabrication of MMCs (metal matrix composites). A general review is made on the stir casting process which is a novel type of liquid state processes used to fabricate aluminium metal matrix composites (AMMCs). Accordingly the literature reviewed, among all the processes of fabrications of MMCs, stir casting is found quite simple and provide fairly distribution of the reinforcing particles resulting in increased stiffness, hardness and strengths (tensile, yield and compressive). Setup used for the stir casting process is quite simple which includes a furnace for melting and preheating of the matrix material and reinforcing material. A stirrer is used for stirring the mixture of matrix and reinforcing particles and a die for the casting of mixture obtained after stirring process. Due to operational ease and cost effectiveness the stir casting is widely accepted process amongst all liquid state processes for the fabrication of AMCs.
