Author Name : Dr. Ravneet Sandhu, Drishti karir
ABSTRACT
The objective of this study was to examine the body image and eating disorder in male and female athletes of different sports. A total of 100 athletes (50 males and females), participated in this study practicing at Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar. The mean age of the athletes was 20.35±1.94. The Eating Attitude Test (EAT-26) was applied to evaluate disordered eating behaviors. The Body Shape Questionnaire (BSQ-34) was used to evaluate athlete’s dissatisfaction with body image. Body fat percentage and BSQ 34 scores were significantly different between males and females with p value of 0.000 and 0.014 {(significant at P<0.05)} respectively. A positive correlation was observed between scores of body fat% and BSQ 34. No significant difference was observed in the scores of EAT 26 among male and female athletes. Also, the scores of EAT 26 was not correlated with the scores of both BSQ 34 and Body fat %. Therefore, according to the recent research increase in body fat percentage may establish body dissatisfaction in athletes. Although disordered eating behavior may occur irrespective of change in body fat percentage and body dissatisfaction.
