The Psychological Effects of Mother Tongue Influence on Pronunciation

Author Name : Nidhi Simon, Dr. Uma Mishra

ABSTRACT Mother Tongue Influence (MTI) significantly impacts second language pronunciation, shaping linguistic competence and psychological responses. This paper critically analyzes the psychological effects of MTI on pronunciation, focusing on cognitive, affective, and social dimensions. Drawing from linguistic theories and psychological frameworks, the study explores how MTI contributes to pronunciation anxiety, self-efficacy issues, and cognitive load, influencing language learners’ confidence and communication effectiveness. The research adopts an analytical and critical approach, reviewing existing literature on phonetic transfer, fossilization, and accent bias. The study highlights both positive and negative effects of MTI, emphasizing that while it aids initial language acquisition, it often results in persistent pronunciation errors and social stereotyping. Psychological theories such as Krashen’s Affective Filter Hypothesis and Cognitive Load Theory provide insights into the mental barriers associated with overcoming MTI. Furthermore, sociolinguistic perspectives reveal how pronunciation affects identity formation and social integration.
