The Role of Afghan Women In Afghan-Taliban Peace Negotiation And Settlements

Author Name : Wazhmia Shekib, Dr. Zahid Hussain

ABSTRACT

Afghan women's demands for "meaningful participation" in preparation for peace talks were one of the topics raised by US-Taliban talks to end the war in Afghanistan (now waiting for the second round of Afghan-Afghan peace talks to begin). the list of members of the Afghan negotiating team also included four women. HabibaSarabi, Fauzia Kofi, Fatemeh Gilani and SharifaZormati are the four women selected by the Afghan delegation to negotiate face-to-face with the Taliban, so that Afghan women do not have to worry about the negotiation process and have a representative. But the concept of meaningful participation goes beyond consulting or having a formal representative in a possible peace negotiation. Rather, it is the meaningful participation of women in all the stages and efforts of peace. It remains to be seen if these women are able to defend the rights of all their kind or not. The current paper tries to highlight the role of women in Afghan-Taliban peace negotiation and looks into the complexities involved in this process.
