Validation of Methylene Blue Technique for the Surface Area Measurement of Carbon Material Synthesized From Fibrous Plant Precursor

Author Name : Vilas Khairnar, Maheshwar Sharon

ABSTRACT

The surface area of porous material is an important parameter in any energy storage technology. In the present work specific surface area of porous carbon material synthesized from rice straw was measured by two different methods. The aim of this study was to validate the methylene blue technique for the surface area measurement of porous carbon material synthesized from Fibrous Plant Precursor. The morphology of particles of the carbon was studied by scanning electron microscopy to confirm the porosity of carbon. To measure the surface area basic methylene blue dye in a range of concentration in dilute aqueous solution is applied at room temperature and adsorption isotherms are determined by spectrophotometric analysis of solutions. The specific surface area calculated by this method was 245.75 m2/gm. Specific surface area of porous carbon material was also calculated using the BET (Brunauer–Emmett–Teller)theory. The study was performed with surface area analyzer instrument. The surface area calculated by BET method was 242.56 m2/gm.It was found that the specific surface area value obtained by methylene blue sorption method correlate with specific surface area determined by nitrogen adsorption/desorption BET method.
