Vijay Tendulkar's Analysis of the Psyche of the Indian Middle Class in the Post-colonial Era

Author Name : Ms. Renu Sharma

ABSTRACT

An explanation of post-coloniality can be found in an abstract reading of post-colonial literature and an in-depth examination of that literature. Colonialist power structures are revealed and deconstructed through a close reading of the development of Indian and Marathi theatre beginning in the 1950s. Vijay Tendulkar and all of his various works are not an exception to this rule. The work of Tendukr, who is considered to be one of the pioneers of modern Indian and Marathi theatre, reflects both the influence of colonialism and, more specifically, the predicament of middle-class Indian women in the context of the culture and politics of their country. The majority of his plays centre on various facets of post-colonialism, specifically patriarchy in everyday life, as their central theme. Each of these plays highlights the ways in which lower and middle class Indians, and especially women, are still subjected to a colonial legacy that was itself strongly patriarchal in all institutional, economic, political, and ideological aspects. In particular, the plays focus on how women are subjected to this legacy. This paper nyeTendukr's exploration of the middle class psyche in post-colonial India through some of his most important plays and discusses the plays' relevance in the 21st century. The paper begins by providing a brief overview of the development of the middle class and the significance of researching the middle class psyche.
